Today there was an article in the Bakersfield Californian about the artist’s reception of Curiouser and Curiouser this Saturday. Take a look!

This painting was commissioned by my friend Patty. She saw one similar in my show ‘Other Side of the Rainbow” in June. This one is similar in pose but I used many different colors and enlarged it. My crazy life got in the way and this project was on my list for much too long.

Patty is a big fan of wolves. Her sweet husband messaged me and we surprised her with it today! She loves it and I couldn’t be happier…

My favorite childhood story was Alice in Wonderland. The story holds a lot of special memories for me. Many of which most wouldn’t understand. Most memorable and easiest to explain is my memory of watching it at my Grandma Helen’s house as a kid. My cousins and I would lay on our bellies on the carpet and watch Disney movies everytime we were together. I can still remember the smell of her house and the feel of the carpet. With my hands under my chin and elbows firmly planted on the ground and reciting every line. I watched it so much I memorized the Disney version and would often recite lines when I felt they fit in everyday situations.

As a teen I would watch it from time to time and find deeper meaning to the confusion and curiousity of poor lost Alice. My mother had me paint many scenes from the Disney version throughout our house. Sophmore year we moved to Roundup, Montana. Not going to begin to explain that place. I will say that imagination was important to my sanity during that time and finding a true friend. His name was Colter. He and I had many curious adventures walking the 1 mile stretch of Main Street that summer. Our imaginations were as compatible as our love for art. Before I left he gave me a gift. It was the Alice in Wonderland book by Lewis Carroll. Shortly thereafter I moved back to California and began my adult life by having a child and marrying my highschool sweetheart, Ty.

While brainstorming my upcoming show in February I thought back to many of the odd things that happened in Roundup. They are all fond memories and for a few months I felt as though I was in Wonderland. I imagined myself, Alice, and he the Hatter. As an adult I think back to that time and realize that was my time to be myself. My very short time….

My show, “Curiouser and Curiouser,” opens in February at The Empty Space Gallery at 706 Oak Street, Bakersfield, CA. The show will include 8 or 9 pieces based on the characters from my very special Lewis Carroll book. I’m using the words to dictate my images. Not the “Disney” versions, but more realistic animals in the story’s situations. This show has been a long time coming in my head and never far from my heart for so many reasons.

The featured piece is the first of this show, titled “Dormouse.”

What a great surprise!

In Thursday’s paper the following article will run! I was asked to take a profile picture for the paper but I really didn’t completely understand what it was for. I knew there was an award for a sort of best-of type article but I had no idea it was such a grand ordeal! I’m humbled and so appreciative to The Californian, Don Martin of Metro Galleries, Jesus Fidel (my cheerleader and best friend), my family and many Foundry friends who push me and surround me with encouragement to press forward.

My goodness, what a great way to end the year!
