“Curiouser and Curiouser,” is now on display at The Empty Space Gallery for the month of February, 2013.
In this body of nine new and uniquely detailed paintings, the artist takes us on an expedition through her memories growing up. As a young teen Christina moved to Roundup, Montana. She describes her time there to be similar to a “Wonderland adventure.” Christina paints her favorite characters from the story, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, by Lewis Carroll, and recognizes them as characters from her real life.
During her experience of creating this body of work, Sweet says, “I went on a journey through my memories. I used familiar faces in my characters, and studied my thoughts, as I moved through the works.”
“Curiouser and Curiouser” will be on display from February 1st through February 28th. Please join us for the artist’s reception on Saturday, February 9th, from 2pm to 5pm, at The Empty Space, 706 Oak Street, Bakersfield, CA 93304.
Artist’s note: This show means a lot to me for so many reasons. I hold the fond memories the story incites dear. As a child, I watched the Disney version of the story many, many, many times… As a teen I read the book by Lewis Carroll, which was a gift from a dear friend. As an adult when I read it I found myself comparing my wild adventures as a teen to the confusing and curious journey Alice took. I find myself lost in a Wonderland of my own comparing the story characters to people I’ve known.
While creating the paintings I used familiar faces including my daughter Emily as Alice, my cat Charlie for the cheshire cat, myself as the Queen and my wonderful Curator, Jesus Fidel, as the Mad Hatter. This show had been in my mind for years. It’s liberating to have it all on canvas and on the walls of T.E.S. I’m honored to be the opening exhibit for the newly renovated theatre and gallery.
